What I Play…
A huge part of what makes “live” music a special part of an entertainment consideration is the interaction between the performer and the audience. Not every audience is the same. It didn’t take long to learn this part about performing. Every audience takes on its own nature. Some prefer for the musician to engage them with interaction. Other audiences prefer for the musician to provide them with a pleasant musical backdrop for conversation, or dinner. I am very sensitive to this aspect of performing and have learned to accommodate all types of musical engagements; from festivals, weddings, and private parties, to performances in local establishments around town.
My song list is comprised of a very diverse, but popular group of hits from the 60’s,70’s, and 80’s. Sometimes folks refer to my show as a “time machine” because songs from the past have a way of transporting us back to the good old days.
During the first part of evening I play more of an acoustic set; familiar songs by James Taylor, Bob Dylan, Dan Fogelberg, Jim Croce, and Neil Young. Those types of songs have a calm way of finding themselves to be a welcome addition to most social events. They also tend to set well with dining guests as they converse with friends over dinner.
As the sun sets, the songs will change gears, and music will become more up-tempo. For the latter part of the evening I will play upbeat songs by artists such as: Alabama, Alan Jackson, Bobby Day, Cat Stevens, Dobie Grey, Doobie Brothers, Eddie Rabbit, Elton John, Four Tops, Frankie Vallie, Jimmy Buffett, John Cougar, John Denver, Kenny Loggins, Lionel Richie, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Neil Diamond, Randy Travis, Temptations, The Drifters, Van Morrison, Wilson Pickett, and many others. It is not uncommon for dancers to take to the floor during the performance.
Sometimes my daughter, Emily Curtis, performs with me, (or should I say she lets me perform with her). She is a talented singer and performer- She brings another dimension to the performance. She has a lot of songs on YouTube and many recent Itunes releases.
Tidbits
Although I play cover tunes at my performances, I have recorded 2 albums of my own original songs. My first Album was entitled “Walk Home with Me.” It continues to get regional radio air-play.
